Direct-to-Film (DTF) transfers are a popular choice for custom garment printing, offering vibrant colours and detailed designs. Proper care helps preserve the appearance of your prints and extend the life of your garments. Follow this guide for washing, drying, ironing, and maintaining your DTF-printed apparel.

Why Proper Care Matters

The lifespan of a DTF print depends on the quality of the transfer, correct application, garment material, and ongoing care. Gentle washing and limited heat exposure help reduce the risk of fading, cracking, and peeling. Always follow the garment’s care label alongside the transfer care instructions, using the gentler method when requirements differ.

Key Tips for Washing DTF Transfers

  1. Wait 24 Hours After Application
Allow at least 24 hours after heat pressing before the first wash. This waiting period starts when the transfer is applied to the garment, rather than when the garment is received.

  2. Turn Garments Inside Out
Wash garments inside out to reduce friction between the printed surface, other clothing, and the washing machine drum.

  3. Use Cold Water
Choose a cold-water wash to help protect the print and reduce heat exposure. Follow any additional temperature restrictions on the garment’s care label.

  4. Choose a Gentle Cycle
Use a gentle or delicate cycle and avoid overloading the machine. Reduced agitation helps limit wear on both the garment and the design.

  5. Use Mild Detergent
Choose a mild detergent and avoid bleach or harsh stain removers on the printed area. Do not apply concentrated detergent directly to the transfer.

  6. Skip Fabric Softeners
Avoid liquid fabric softeners and dryer sheets to help prevent residue buildup on the garment and print.

  7. Hand Wash Gently When Preferred
Hand washing in cold water with mild detergent is another option. Avoid scrubbing, twisting, or wringing the printed area.

Drying DTF-Printed Garments

  1. Air Dry When Possible
Lay the garment flat or hang it using a method suitable for its fabric. Keep it away from direct heat and prolonged sunlight.

  2. Use Low Heat If Tumble Drying Is Allowed
Check the garment’s care label before using a dryer. If permitted, turn the garment inside out and select the lowest suitable heat setting. Remove it promptly once dry and avoid overdrying.

  3. Avoid Dry Cleaning
Do not dry clean DTF-printed garments, as the cleaning process may damage the transfer.

Ironing DTF-Printed Garments

  1. Never Iron Directly Over the Print
Direct contact with a hot iron can damage the transfer. Whenever possible, iron only the unprinted areas.

  2. Follow the Garment’s Care Label
If ironing is permitted, turn the garment inside out and use a low temperature suitable for the fabric.

  3. Use a Pressing Cloth for Additional Protection
When ironing near the printed area, place a clean pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric. A cloth does not make direct ironing over the transfer safe.

  4. Keep Heat Exposure Brief
Keep the iron moving and avoid prolonged pressure or steam over the printed area. Allow the garment to cool before wearing or folding it.

Additional Tips for Longer-Lasting DTF Prints

  • Apply the Transfer Correctly: Follow the instructions for your specific transfer, including temperature, time, pressure, peel method, and any required finishing press. Careful washing cannot compensate for incorrect application.

  • Avoid Abrasive Laundry Items: Keep printed garments away from exposed zippers, hook-and-loop fasteners, and rough fabrics that may rub against the design.

  • Avoid Excessive Stretching: Do not pull, stretch, or pick at the printed area.

  • Store Garments Fully Dry: Keep garments in a cool, dry place away from prolonged direct sunlight. Never store them while damp.

  • Treat Stains Carefully: Avoid scrubbing the print or applying harsh stain treatments directly to it.

With correct application and gentle care, your DTF transfers can maintain their appearance for longer. Wash inside out in cold water, use mild detergent, and limit heat exposure to help protect both the print and the garment.
